GP Surgery Engages with Patients to Improve Services
Many patients attended an event organised by Beccles Medical Centre at the Public Hall in Beccles on 1 May to explain planned improvements to medical services. This meeting was chaired by Tony Osmanski, Chair of East Coast Community Healthcare on behalf of the practice.
Dr Julia McLean launched the evening with a presentation outlining the vision for the practice, and summarised the key improvements that the team had already made, whilst meeting the requirements as directed by NHSEngland. To see the presentation discussed, please click here.
These included an increase in the number of Care Navigators answering phones during peak times which had resulted in a reduced average call waiting time for patients.
There will be a planned change of clinical system, which will take place in mid-July. Dr McLean acknowledged that during the migration process the new system would cause some disruption. Once in place, it would enable patients to get better access to universal services. Further digital developments include the recent launch of the NHS App, which gives online advice and better access for patients to their records, repeat prescriptions and booking of appointments.
‘Primary Care Home’ was explained, which ECCH (East Coast Community Healthcare) and the practice will be part of. In contrast to the traditional model where the GP sees every patient, in the new model the GP becomes more of a consultant that leads a team of medical staff that cares for 5000 people. This will enable the practice to ensure that patients are able to be treated by the clinician with skills most suitable to meet their needs and enables GPs to focus on the most complex patients. This also gives patients continuity of care with a regular team of Clinicians.
Following the presentation, patients were invited to ask questions to a panel which consisted of Dr Julia McLean, Dr Tim Morton, Dr Glenn Collins, the Practice Manager, a representative from East Coast Community Health Care (ECCH) and three patient representatives.
After the event, Dr McLean said “I am delighted that so many of our patients turned out this evening to learn and contribute to changes to their local healthcare. We are always looking for opportunities to improve, and welcome suggestions from patients. I would like to encourage patients to get involved in our Patient Participation Group (PPG) where they can formally contribute to the improvement of our services including the development of a Patient Charter”.
